*Service: Friendly, fast – Carolina will look after you

Sick of the pizza, panini and baguette craze?  Well, you’re in luck. It’s time to refresh your pallet and make room for another South American staple, the Arepa.  Slowly but surely, the authentic flavours of Colombian cuisine are making their way into Melbourne cafe’s.  Sonido invites lovers of great coffee and exotic delights to dine in their bright, colourful & festive world .

Sonido is the creative concept of design students Santiago Villamizar and Carolina Talero. The duo have successfully transformed the modest Fitzroy space into a celebration of culture, diversity and ethnicity.  With Cruzao Bar just down the road, the friendly fire between the two Venezuelan kitchens is heating up.  Sonido’s traditional corn meal pocket (arepa) is smaller and thinner in size but carries a strong flavour. The smoky fresco cheese, fresh salsa and creamy guacamole hit the spot and aesthetically pleasing.  The coffee is excellent and the exotic, fruit juices are exciting.

Cruzao takes out the battle for best Arepa but there’s no denying the uplifting ambience and relaxed atmosphere Sonido exudes. The empanadas may not be to the Argentineans standard, but rest assured the classic Latino dish will be devoured in seconds.
