What inspired you to launch Little Rock Boutique?
As kids, Sarah and I would love pretending we had a shop. I was the customer and Sarah was the shop keeper. Sometimes we would bake toffees and cakes and try and sell them from a stall we set up at the front of Mum and Dad’s house.
I guess running a business together has always been something that we have wanted to do, it’s just taken a while for it to all come together. We have both done a lot of different things before launching Little Rock and that has really helped prepare us, giving us a strong mix of skills and experience. As sisters, we have a really good understanding of one another, which really helps when running a business. We work well creatively because our different skills compliment each other, so we make a pretty good team, even though we sometimes argue.
How would you describe the Little Rock consumer?
They are predominantly from 20 – 45 years old but can be any age and from anywhere. They are people who like interesting and unique pieces that add warmth to a home, like to buy their friends beautiful gifts, are fashion conscious but also focused on finding things that suit their own personal style.

How would you describe the current collections? What trends have you forecasted?
The current trends are definitely seventies inspired. There’s been a revival of vintage, interesting patterns, and bright splashes of colour.
There is also a definite a shift in social awareness happening with the consumer – people are returning to support local business and are enjoying a more personal style of shopping, which is central to Little Rock. We want to make the often cold world of internet shopping a warm, personalised experience. Customers are buying one-of-a-kind pieces that have a history and a story and are more meaningful than mass-produced products.
I think people are now feeling a sense of satisfaction when they are able to create their own personal style, highlighting their individuality by mixing the old with the new – whether they are putting an outfit together or want to create an interesting space in the home.
Is there fierce competition among other online stores within Australia, what separates Little Rock from the rest? Where do you see yourself in the marketplace?
Primarily, we created Little Rock as a creative outlet. We don’t see ourselves as being in direct competition with other sites because we just do what we love, which seems to have worked for us so far. One major difference between us and the big guys is that we listen to our customers and try to provide a more personal experience – just like a real boutique.
If one of our customers has a request for something, like a vintage piece that they just can’t seem to find, them we keep our eyes open on our buying trips and try to find them what they need. This kind of service is something that the big sites can’t offer. I guess Little Rock is more about a personal touch. Our vision was to create a destination where we people could find beautiful things for their homes, friends, or themselves. We just love to share our finds with our customers.
Why do you think Australians lean towards international online stores like ASOS? Is there a difference in quality and price?
If you know what you’re looking for, these massive website are great for a designer bargain. There is definitely a place for the little guys too. Little Rock is really focused on creating an interesting range of products for its customer and providing a warmth in customer service that can be hard to find when shopping online. We also stock labels that are not always easy for everyone to get their hands because they are not mass-produced.
