How would you describe the current in-store collections?

Autumn-wintery pieces are just starting to bounce in. I am inspired by all the magic designers that are stocked in the store. Currently causing a stir, Fool’s injection of colourful dresses in the front window is a screeching traffic-stopper on Victoria Street. Yhe wild shapes designed by Stella Blanche and the absolutely adora-bubble creations of Grazed Youth. Arriving soon is the latest collection launched by Limedrop called ‘The Lake House’ and Satu’s slinky Autumn/Winter range.  Beautiful new pieces have just arrived from Naomi Murrell, Scotatto and Little Shop of Handmade. Oh, and Moral Fibre is on its way soon … and more December Forever shoes.

For many men, Kids in Berlin is their go-to place for t-shirts. Two edgy t-shirt labels newly introduced are Modernist and Sirius Grafik, a unique addition into the mix of many t-shirt labels, including ever-popular Hamb, Kinyobi, Tomorrow Never Knows and Bronzen Temple.

Kids in Berlin is dripping with sooo many talented jewellery designers… Corky Saint Clair: artist of many talents – Nicole Tattersall and In Sync Design, recent winner of the Melbourne Design Award.

What inspired you to launch Kids in Berlin?

Oh, the business has been around for six years. I came on the scene last October… My background is in Marketing for Arts, Film and Entertainment. Definitely a change of scene and pace. Always wondered what it would be like to be my own boss…

How would you describe your own personal style? Is that reflected in the store?

My style is dramatic and moody. Not really reflected in the store, I don’t think people really want to be dramatised when they come into the shop. But I’d like to think the store has its own mood-waves. With over 100 Australian designers in stock, it’s a mixed bag of lollies in the store. For customers, it’s quite an adventure.

Is there fierce competition among other fashion boutiques in Melbourne?

Nah way, more like a beautiful camaraderie amongst peers. All making the best of it, and fighting the good fight.

How important is it to support local trade?

It is important to support anyone who creates, I think. Kids in Berlin is dedicated to Australian indie maverick designers. They are ingenious, I love them. And customers take pride in knowing they’ve purchased a piece designed and made so close to home.
