Geoffrey Haining, the humble Australian designer whose journey of progression systematically elevated the rising star into the dynamic world of cutting edge fashion.  The most recent recipient of the Fashion Exposed Debut Designer Award for 2010, Haining’s method, skill and creativity has continually envolved throughout his career. Shaped by Ben Pollitt’s signature bold cuts, sleek lines and minimalistic colour palette, Haining’s potential was further reinforced during an internship position with renowned label, FREIDRICH GRAY.

Haining’s illustrious and textured designs capture an essence of delicacy, darkness and detailing. A stark contrast against traditional conceptions of beauty, FRANCZ exhibits an androgynous and powerful collection of heavy, bold and daring pieces.   Following the success of his award winning showcase, FRANCZ is soon to release his latest designs titled, “Lifeless dead AW11.” Exploring the idea of military history, Haining looks at the suffering of people affected by war.

For now, FRANCZ is still in developmental stages, continually sourcing inspiration and finding its place within the industry. Made entirely in Australia, FRANCZ is a wonderful example of the possibilities local designers and manufacturers can offer.

What inspired you to launch FRANCZ?

FRANCZ is a reflection of myself, my past experiences and were I want to go. Music is usually were the emotion/ theme comes from although history has a lot to do wit it all.

I am a very visual person, so I am always looking at something.

I guess it was the idea that I would be able to do my own thing, my way and my aesthetic. When I was studying, I was extremely fortunate to do an internship with FRIEDRICH GRAY, were I learnt a lot about design, more so about my self and it really re-enforced that this was what I wanted. I loved every minute of it.

Is there fierce competition among other fashion labels in Australia, what separates FRANCZ from the rest?

I think yes and no, there are plenty of brands out there that have similarities with each other, I am trying to go my own way and do it with out the idea of something being impossible, FRANCZ has its own path, there are labels that I am really inspired by yet I am trying to do it with out being to caught up in fashion.

What advice do you have for those starting labels or planning on opening a store?

The same as I have always been told, “Don’t be to hasty tiger” and I probably should have listened to this more myself, though when you have that feeling inside, you know its time.

Do you rely on social networking to promote your business?

I don’t rely on them, as this is my first collection I didn’t have a website when I would have liked to, I’m about to have a blog up which I am excited about, its just a better way for future buyers/ customers to see what FRANCZ is about.

Where do you see FRANCZ in the next year? What have you learnt thus far?

Hopefully more stockists, as I am currently stocking in THE BUNKER in Brisbane which only happened late this year. Just to evolve. Learn more. Wining the Fashion Exposed, Debut Designer Award for 2010 was a goal of mine and has opened many doors for me.
