High Street Northcote, a very becoming strip of Melbourne. Known for its new cafe’s, laid-back bars and stylish restaurants, High Street is steadily becoming a recognisable landmark for fashion and shopping. In the centre of the street sits the quaint shop, Dear Gladys. Desirable vintage and retro garments vibrantly decorate the walls of the charming store.
The smells, sounds and sights of Dear Gladys emanate a classic, eclectic and crazy vibe. A timeline through fashion history, Dear Gladys is a reminder of the fabulous frocks of the 50’s, peace of love of the 60’s and 70’s and some rather hideous mistakes of the 80’s and 90’s! Unlike other vintage stores, Dear Gladys is incredibly affordable and there’s nothing more reassuring than knowing your purchases are supporting a local and worthy cause.
In accordance with community based initiative ‘Fitted for Work’, Dear Gladys is committed to helping disadvantaged women obtain work, maintain employment and ultimately achieve financial independence through a volunteer based service. ‘Fitted for Work’ is a not for profit foundation that is designed to assist, prepare, dress and instil new found confidence in thousands of Australian women overcoming adversity.

Every woman NEEDS to invest in a pair of high waisted, tailored pants. They elongate the leg and are extremely flattering for most shapes and sizes. They should sit above the belly button and can be worn with belts. This pair had the cutest love heart zippers…
There are a plethora of blouses that have charming embroidery in store. Always wear tucked in. This cream colour goes perfect with black or navy pants. You do need height, so pair with pumps or peep toes.
Who doesn’t love Docs? There’s a great selection of leather boots at Dear Gladys. The best thing is they’re not all size 6’s… You’ll most likely find a pair that fit your feet. Wear with tights, over-sized jumper or a really cute floral dress.
This jumper is crazy/psychedelic but so warm and snuggie. Ok, you won’t be hitting the town in this ensemble but it’s perfect for casual wear and the pattern is unique and eye catching.
So darling, this peachy colour is perfect for both summer and winter. It’s a great length to be worn with black tights in winter and bare legs in summer. We belted it, to give more shape… If it’s a one off amazing dress, it’s worth getting it altered to fit your figure. The ruffles on the chest and the sleeves make it even more unique and lovable. Keep it simple, boots/heals, beanie if it’s cold.
The dresses of this era are made with detailed stitching and quality fabrics. This dress had its original tag on it, which makes it even more special.
To avoid looking like you’re going to a fancy dress, pair with simple black tights, suede boots or heels (we found these ones in store) and a vintage leather bag. No need for excessive jewellery, the dress sparkles on its own.
Dear Gladys have an amazing selection of skirts, excellent for winter wear with tights and a gorgeous chiffon blouse. There are quite a few to choose from, you don’t want to detract from the detailing on the skirt so keep it fairly simple, no need to overload with jewellery but definitely play around with some vintage hats.
*I’m a little unsure about this ensemble as a whole. I like elements of it. The ankle boots are so unique and have the most incredible stud detailing. Great with tights and dresses, jeans and blazers..
Great selection of leather and cropped wool jackets. The crochet blouse is very Madonna circa 1980’s / Issey Miyake. Great with a fabulous pair of blue denim jeans.

I think we proved that it’s impossible to walk out of here without bringing multiple purchases with you… it’s all so good!
I live in St Kilda so i don’t come by this area much, but I really want to head to this store.
Do they still have the pants or floral dress? And it’s so true, the purchases can be justified as a donation! Love this. Great job!
